Boxing thrills

The weekly trials of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) continued unabated at the Prisons Canteen venue with attractive pairings.

Black Panther’s gym Kofi Kanjah set the exciting evening into motion with a 24-14 victory over James Okanta of Sparta gym in the lightweight contest.

Attoh Quarshie gym’s Eric Ameshikor followed up with a 5-2 convincing victory over Samuel Ayorigah in a welterweight contest with Paul Cofie of Akotoku gym losing 1-3 to Anane Kutsoke of Reformers in a featherweight contest.

The Bridge Boxing Club (BBC) registered its first win through Azumah Mohammed who stopped Moses Kabah of Reformers in the second round of their scheduled three light welterweight contest.

Pride of Alajo based gym, Fit Square, Jesse Lartey earned a Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in their final round of a bantamweight clash with Patrick Aryee of the Wisdom gym.

In a middleweight clash, Black Panthers gym Michael Osmanu lost 0-9 to Bismark Channy of Reformers while Mathias Sulley from the Square Deal gym posted a 7-2 win over Wisdom gym’s Bright Ayala in a lightweight contest.

n The second edition of the annual “Stom da yard” basketball competition rolled on over the weekend at the main Legon basketball court with the Legon Wolves and D’Elite basketball teams coming up top in the male and female categories respectively, reports Raymond Ackumey

The competition which was opened to basketball teams in and around the Legon vicinity brought together eight strong basketball teams five in the male category and three in the female category to battle for the kings and queens of the Legon Basketball Court as well as have the opportunity to represent the locality at the final of finals in December.

Competing in the male category were Legon Wolves, Legon Angels, Dynasty Nets, Agingo Eleven and Greater Accra Team while the ladies had Viola Ladies, All Stars Ladies and D’Elite Ladies.

The opening game saw Legon Wolves sweeping aside Legon Angels by 22 baskets to 18 while the Greater Accra Team called off the bluff of the Dynasty Nets by 12 baskets to 10.

The Greater Accra Team continued their fairytale run of form beating Agingo Eleven by an12 to 11 margin before finally bowing out to Legon Wolves 17 to 13 baskets.

Agingo Eleven were on the rampage defeating Dynasty Nets by 25 to 15, but succumbed to eventual winner 23 to 19 in the final game of the day.
